I was supposed to write an arithmetic evaluator, because we wanted to evaluate formulas entered by the user. OK, this is not very common. But it may become a powerful part of a system, because it is intuitive to write formulas directly. You might extend it such that the user may also use variables and specify a part of the data-processing like this.
